COPPER BREAKS STATE PARK VISITOR CENTER
Copper Breaks State Park is about 200 miles from the nearest city, out in the midst of the Rolling Plains region of Texas, which has the nickname of the “Big Empty.” The goal of this exhibit was to draw visitors to an under-appreciated park and teach them more about the landscape, history, and wildlife and resources that can be found here.

With the addition of a new planetarium to the center, there was an opportunity to further educate people on what it means to be a dark sky region.

The visitor center is divided into two content areas: sky and land. The Copper Breaks State Park has a resource many people don’t think about: darkness. Stargazers travel a long distance to be able to camp below a sky with minimal light pollution.

This exhibit is designed to educate viewers on the history of this land, not just of the physical terrain but also the story of the Comanche and Kiowa tribes that once inhabited this region.
